Applying transfers
Introduction:
A guide to applying transfers.
The paints, materials and brushes I used are listed below the guide (in order of appearance in fine movie style) but it's only a guide and if you prefer using a different set of paints or other sizes of brushes or feel you can skip some stages then don't feel constrained by my choices.
![]() Step 01Paint any areas where transfers will be applied with Ardcoat using a small brush | ![]() Step 02Cut transfers from the sheet and carefully slice into any that will be applied to curved areas so that they can hold the shape | ![]() Step 03Flood the area with water then either dip the transfer in water for a second or two or lay on a damp cloth/piece of kitchen towel to wet the backing, once the transfer is moving carefully place it on the surface using a brush to manoeuvre it into position then dry the transfer carefully with kitchen towel |

![]() Step 04Coat the transfer with Ardcoat to seal them in and flatten the surface using a small brush | ![]() Step 05Coat the transfer with Lahmian medium to take the shine from the Ardcoat off using a small brush | ![]() Step 06Paint the surface with a matching colour, in this case Ceramite white using a detail/00 brush |
![]() Step 07Paint the surrounding area with a matching colour, in this case Abaddon black using a detail/00 brush (you can also sponge on the base colour such as black or grey in small amounts to represent wear in the same way as in the weathering guide on this website) | ![]() Step 08Wash transfers with Nuln oil to knock it back using a small brush | ![]() Finished effect |
