Weathering techniques

Introduction:

A guide to creating a chipped paint weathering effect on vehicles.

In this guide some of the paints used are the older style Games Workshop paints as I started the force before the new ones were released so I've also given the current equivalents afterwards.

The paints, materials and brushes I used are listed below the guide (in order of appearance in fine movie style) but it's only a guide and if you prefer using a different set of paints or other sizes of brushes or feel you can skip some stages then don't feel constrained by my choices.

Step 01

Step 01

I first paint up the model and apply transfers using the same techniques found in the guides on this site, I've left off the tracks to avoid getting unwanted paint on them and the weathering powders are applied afterwards

Step 02

Step 02

Tear up a small piece of sponge so you have a rough surface area and then apply a small amount of Abaddon black by either dipping it or using a brush, dab it on a cloth to remove the excess then sponge onto transfers in black areas. I use tweezers to hold the sponge for better accuracy.

Step 03

Step 03

Using another piece of sponge apply Mechanicus standard grey using the same techniques to transfers on grey areas

Step 04

Step 04

Using yet another piece of sponge apply Tin bitz/Warplock bronze onto the areas you think would get worn or chipped (generally on the leading edges and joints in doors/hatches).

Step 05

Step 05

Another piece of sponge this time with Mithril silver/Runefang steel over the top of the Tin bitz/Warplock bronze leaving some showing around the edges.

Step 06

Step 06

I then glue the tracks onto the vehicle.

Step 07

Step 07

Dust the chipped areas with FW's Aged rust weathering powder using an old brush

Step 08

Step 08

Then dust the same areas with FW's Dark sand weathering powder using an old brush

Step 09

Step 09

Redefine the gaps on the hatches and doors with Charadon granite/Stormvermin fur using a detail brush

Step 10

Step 10

Apply FW's black soot weathering powder with a small amount of water to vents and barrels using an old brush then when dry use the a dry old brush to gently blend the edges
